Welcome to the VWH Riding Club
We are a long established friendly club with members from all around the Cirencester, Malmesbury and Swindon area.
As a club we cater for all levels of rider, from those who just want to have fun with their horse, new combinations starting their training, through to people competing their horses at any level.
We are affiliated to British Riding Clubs, within Area 9, which enables members to compete in qualifiers of all equestrian disciplines and the chance to qualify for national championships at all levels.
We hold regular clinics, residential camps and training days with a variety of instructors to suit all abilities and welcome new members to come and join the fun!
New Clinic Dates Added
Please see our Clinics page for details of new clinics with Anne-Marie Taylor and Sophie Dickinson. This includes the return of our 'Festive Musical Ride' Choreographed and instructed by Sophie Dickinson.
Area 9 Winter Dressage Qualifier - Thank you!
On Sunday 10th November we as a club hosted the Area 9 Winter Dressage Qualifier at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre, Gloucester. A huge thank you goes to all our members and friends who volunteered to help run this event and make it such a success that was enjoyed by all. We were graced with sunshine all day and with every-one working together the day ran like clockwork with 31 teams competing before we ran out of daylight!
This year it will be held at 'The Bear Inn' Cirencester, now looking fabulous under new management.
Menu and further details can be found on our VWH Social Events page.
What is it: Lots of fun, think mounted games for adults without the need for getting on and off and with real weapons! This is the sport of tentpegging where initially you will be trained to use a lance on your horse picking up targets from the ground. "War horse meets riding club" - the main aim is to enjoy yourself. This is safe, and you only pick up a real weapon when you and your horse are ready!
After the success of previous training sessions and our competition earlier in the year, we are once again hosting some training sessions for those who have never tried it before and for those wishing to improve their skills under the ever patient and brilliant watchful eye of Major David Puckey.
Training will be held at the indoor school at South Cerney Equestrian Centre on Sunday December 1st from 10am.
For more information and booking details please click here.

Le Trec Winter Training Session
BHS TREC is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports. It is fun for both the horse and rider and while it is a challenging event, it is suitable for all levels of rider.
TREC competitions are made up of 3 phases - orienteering, control of paces and obstacles. On Sunday 27th October we are running a TREC training morning at H&B Equestrian, Kemble.
The morning will focus on CoP (this phase is a fast walk and slow canter along a course - not dressage!) and Obstacles (such a footbridge, maypole, gates, figure 8's, S-bends etc). You don't have to try any obstacles that you don't want to and you don't need to jump if that's not your thing - you just miss that bit out. Any type of horse or pony is suitable so if you want to have lots of fun and laughter with your horse then come and join us! There will also be a BBQ and cakes so something for everyone!
Our instructor is Sophie Dickinson who has trained TREC competitors to Championships of Great Britain level and our facilities at H&B Equestrian include a 60 x 40 m school with a Martin Collins surface and parking on hardstanding. There will be lots of obstacles to try and we will group you according to experience, and BBQ and cake afterwards!
This years Autumn camp was again held at Stockland Lovell near Bridgewater, 19 members and their horses enjoyed training from Anne-Marie Taylor, Kerry Smith and Sian Brown. Kerry and Sian both stepped into the breach with just 24hrs to go as Sophie Dickinson was too ill to join us. A huge thank you goes to Jude Matthews for her fabulous organisation and ability to accommodate every-one's aims and wishes for camp. This year the weather was kind and the rain just about stayed away, with Anne-Marie staying on site we also had non mounted master classes in 'seeing a stride' and 'how to beat the judge' as well as a practice at judging each others test riding. A fabulous time was had by all and dates are now booked for 2014 - please see our camps page.
Post camp social to be held on Friday November 1st from 8pm at Jude's house.
Blenheim Eventers Challenge
September 12th 2013
This years Blenheim Eventers Challenge Team - Jude Matthews and Benji, Fiona Symes and Penny, Scarlett Crew and Humphry and Pip Roberts and Heston tackled a course of show jumps and cross country fences in the arena against the clock at Blenheim International Horse Trials and a fabulous day was had by all. Jude and Benji jumped a very stylish clear round whilst the rest of the team all had a few poles down each but the beefy technical influential cross country fences caused them no problems at all. Having competed at 10.30am this left plenty of time for a fabulous picnic in the sunshine and a spot of shopping before returning home.
Tent Pegging & Skills ar Arms Training
17th August 2013 at Harvest Barn Farm, Aldsworth.
By kind permission of Mr & Mrs G Copley.
This event kindly organised by Jenna Copley was a great success, the training day on the saturday was attended by 12 members with only one horse refusing to carry a lance. Great fun was had by all practicing the drills and everyone attempting to strike the pegs at the gallop by the end of the session.
Over the weekend the actual competition was also held at Harvest Barn Farm and was well supported by club members and many of the Tent Pegging fraternity to help show us all how its really done once you get the hang of it.
Huge thank you to Jenna and her parents for hosting the event, more practice sessions are in the pipeline so watch this space!
Summer Training Day
Our summer training day was held at Rabson Manor Equestrian on Sunday 25th August with BE accredited trainer Ann-Marie Taylor. Ann-Marie is also going to be one of our instructors at Autumn camp this year, hence it was a great opportunity for her to meet us all. The day consisted of three ridden sessions - flat to prepare for jumping, show jumping and cross country with a well earned mid day picnic and every-one had a great day.
Horse Trials Championships
Rosie Bathurst and Sharon Robbins formed part of the Area 9 Intermediate horse trials team for the Championships at Swailcliffe Equestrian 2nd-4th August and had a fabulous time competing in the long format 3 day event. They both completed and thanks to some great cross country riding over a very tricky course Rosie and Murphy finished 10th individually which was fantastic.

Area 9 Show Jumping Qualifier
On Sunday 7th July, the hottest day of the year to date members traveled to Leyland Court, Bristol for the Area 9 show jumping and style jumping qualifier kindly run by kennet vale riding club and a super day was had by all. Our style team finished 3rd with individual 2nd for Pip Roberts and Heston. The intermediate show jumping team finished 2nd over a huge track and Sharon Robbins won the Open class as an individual qualifying for the Championships at Lincoln.
A huge thank you to a very burnt Judith Wilson who was team manager for the day and despite gallons on sunscreen cooked in the heat looking after us all!

Summer BBQ and Le TREC Training Evening
Back by popular demand, Jo and Tony Thornton kindly agreed once again to host the summer bbq and Le trec practice at Crudwell Court Farm on Wednesday 26th June and this year the weather was fantastic!
With a course of 16 obstacles and a control of paces corridor Sophie Dickinson was once again on hand to help us negotiate the obstacles with a fabulous turn out meaning we needed 3 groups from 6-9pm with 19 mounted or leading members having a go.
The BBQ and fire pit were lit at 6pm and a fabulous spread was provided by all those attending with a beautiful marquee and setting a fantastic evening was enjoyed by all.
Roll on this years Trec competitions and a next year we are thinking of making it a day event to include the orienteering phase as well.
Area 9 Horse Trials Qualifier

A fabulous day was had by all those who attended our training day at Rabson Manor on Monday 27th May with Richard Waygood.
